MSP
is a 4-week resident course that convenes approximately 4 times
per year. The course begins at 0830hrs on the applicable convening
date. All students will graduate by 1430hrs on the 4th Friday of
the course. Students will receive an introductory letter that indicates
applicable uniform. The course is designed to train AFM personnel
and international students (officers, other-ranks and civilians)
assigned to Rescue Co-ordination Centres or Rescue Sub-Centres to
perform maritime search planning in the coastal and oceanic environments.
The course is based on manual and computer techniques and teaches
students how to use the Search and Rescue Personal Computer (SAR
PC), the Joint Automated Worksheets (JAWS), and the Manual Solution
as per the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue
Manual (IAMSAR).
Recommended
pre-reporting studies/tips. Although not required, the
following suggestions will help you get the most from the SAR training
available at the Centre:
- Students
are encouraged to read chapters 1.1 to 1.6, 2.1, 2.5, 3.1 to
3.5 of the IAMSAR Manual Vol II, before reporting to Malta.
- Review
basic maths (plus a little algebra), plotting, and calculator
skills. Proficiency in basic math skills is essential to understanding
many concepts of this course.
- If you
are unfamiliar with an "IBM PC" type computer, you
may want to get some practice using a "mouse". It's
not absolutely necessary, but it would help.
- The Centre
provides all the necessary manuals, reference materials, plotting
equipment and stationary supplies.
